Kuusamo wrap-up
3 CommentsWe just finished an exciting weekend of racing here in Kuusamo Finland. Saturday marked the start of the World Cup sprint season with a 1.4k classic sprint on one of the hardest courses we race all year. It's not a super long course but at the same time there are really steep uphills which turn the race into an all-out drag. Warmer temperatures and even some light rain made the tracks pretty hard and fast and as the snow transformed during qualification both harries and klister were in the mix.
During the heats however the tracks got even icier forcing everyone to klister up in order to really hammer the final steep hill.
The atmosphere in Kuusamo is always electric with ski jumping, Nordic combined and XC all going on at the same time so fans lined the steep uphill cheering us on through the pain. My heats were fast and exciting, advancing through my quarterfinal heat with J-Dahl, and then finishing 3rd in the semis just shy of a lucky loser position but good enough for 7th place. I have to say I'm not too sad to see the B-finals go because most of us sprinters found them pretty anticlimactic.
Sunday's 15k course was another grueling one with super steep climbs but with icy classic tracks all the times were really close. I had a decent race, nothing special just a fun distance race, but Bird had an amazing one finishing 4th just a few seconds out of the podium. It's awesome to see him killing it in the classic races and to see him in such good shape going into the Olympic season.
From Kuusamo I will travel to Dusseldorf Germany on Thursday to compete in city sprint World Cups next weekend. D-dorf always pulls in some of the biggest crowds of the year.... sometimes over 80 thousand, so it's going to be an incredible skate sprint and sprint relay.
